The mixed-use development is currently in the early stages of construction and will be completed in fall 2015. Westfield’s design will integrate plant life and water elements that pay homage to the San Fernando Valley before the region was developed and urbanized. California Sycamores, as well as London Plane, Aleppo Pine and Canary Island Pine trees, ranging from 40 to 60 feet tall were salvaged from the site prior to the project’s groundbreaking and will serve as the environmental backbone of The Village. Some trees will be adorned with delicate twinkle lights, while others will feature soft-glowing “moon lights” that will move through the leaves to create patterned shadows. All light sources used, including LED, will be energy-efficient with long life for reduced maintenance costs and to comply with California’s Green Building Standard Codes. Outdoor patios featuring fire pits, hanging basket chairs and large communal tables will be framed by trellises and canopies, giving visitors a variety of seating options. A complimentary play space centered on a custom, leaf-themed climbing structure will be available to families, as well. The Village and Westfield Topanga will be home to more than 325 retailers, which will generate more than $1.2 billion in sales and employ more than 3,000 people.
