New York – eMarketer RETAIL, a platform launched this week by research firm eMarketer, has found the U.S.-based retailers with the highest sales per square foot are Apple, Murphy USA and Tiffany and Co. According to eMarketer’s data, Apple averages $4,551 in sales per square foot over the most recent 12 months.
The second-ranked retailer, Murphy USA, counts among its properties service station-attached convenience stores, which are physically small and rely largely on tobacco sales for revenues. The brand averaged sales of $4,221 per square foot over the same time period. Luxury retailer Tiffany & Co. averaged sales of $3,043 per square foot. The remainder of the top 15 retailers all averaged sales of less than $2,000 per square foot.
Restoration Hardware is seeing the highest growth in store productivity year over year, as a result of the company’s new “design galleries”—larger-format stores that range from 25,000 to 60,000 square feet and are staged like luxury residences and come with amenities like restaurants and rooftop gardens.
Vince and Michael Kors are among the retailers seeing sales per square foot grow quickly, increasing their total retail space 46.6 percent and 34.1 percent year over year, respectively.
To develop its rankings, eMarketer analyzed quantitative and qualitative data from public filings, company reports, equity analysts and banks, research firms, government agencies and media outlets.
