Fort Worth, Texas — Home furnishing retailer Pier 1 Imports has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in federal court in Richmond, Virginia, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The filing comes about six weeks after the Fort Worth-based retailer announced that it would close some 450 stores, about half of its total store count. League City, Texas — Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will open a 10-screen movie theater within the Victory Lakes shopping center in League City, a southeastern suburb of Houston, in late 2020. The theater will feature oversized recliners, made-from-scratch food and a standalone lobby with more than 40 local and regional craft beers. The new Alamo Drafthouse will be the company’s first venue in the Houston area since Alamo Drafthouse LaCenterra opened in Katy in 2018.
Austin, Texas — Furniture Mall of Texas will open a 95,000-square-foot store at Shops at Tech Ridge, a 519,354-square-foot retail power center in Austin. The opening is scheduled for this summer. Lance Morris and P.J. Kaminer of The Retail Connection represented the landlord, RD Management, in the lease negotiations. The store will be the company’s third. The project will convert part of the center into 50,000 square feet of office space, upgrade building façades and add a 15,000-square-foot park. Portland, Texas — Houston-based investment firm McLeod Sears has begun construction on a seven-acre retail redevelopment project in Portland, a city in South Texas near Corpus Christi. The project will convert a site that previously housed an 82,939-square-foot Kmart into a 25,200-square-foot high-end shopping center that will also feature a number of restaurant and retail pad sites, one of which has been leased to Chick-fil-A. McLeod Sears expects to complete the project by summer 2021.
Dallas — Weitzman has arranged the sale of Lake Highlands Village, a 100,000-square-foot retail and office property located at 9090 Skillman St. in Dallas. Shadow-anchored by a Tom Thumb grocery story, the property’s tenant roster includes The UPS store as well as several restaurant, service and medical users. Derek Schuster and Kevin Butkus of Weitzman represented the seller in the transaction. The buyer was Dallas-based JAH Realty LP, which plans to renovate the 50,000-square-foot retail building and upgrade the office component.
