Bronx, N.Y. — One of the largest retail projects in the New York City area gets underway.
Bronx, N.Y. — Construction has begun on the 780,000-square-foot Mall at Bay Plaza, which will open in spring 2014.
The $300 million project, which is being touted as the first enclosed shopping mall to open in the New York City area in 40 years and the first enclosed mall ever in the Bronx, sits on land that Prestige Properties has been developing since the late 1980s.
The parcel currently hosts Bay Plaza Shopping Center that includes Kmart and an AMC movie theater, among several other retailers. The new mall will be added to this center, bringing the total footprint to 2 million square feet.
An existing J.C. Penney and a new Macy’s will anchor the mall. The 160,000-square-foot Macy’s is the first new store to open in New York City in more than 15 years. An 1,800-car parking garage will also be part of the new development. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and other local elected officials joined Prestige Properties at a ceremonial groundbreaking May 14.
