Bentonville, Ark. — Walmart Inc. has announced plans to invest in more than 650 scheduled remodels of Walmart Supercenter and Walmart Neighborhood Market stores this year. The Bentonville-based retail giant also plans to open roughly 20 new stores throughout the remainder of 2026 and early 2027.  Plans include the expansion of a Walmart Supercenter in Tucson, Ariz., as well as the opening of a Supercenter store in Celina, Texas. Arkansas and Missouri — Atlanta-based cheeseburger concept Smalls Sliders has signed a franchise agreement to develop four new units — dubbed Cans — in Northwest Arkansas and Missouri. Brothers Joe and Tim Rheem, along with business partner Johnny Hughes, will own and operate the restaurants. Potential locations include Rogers, Bentonville, Springdale, Fayetteville and Fort Smith, Arkansas, as well as Joplin and Branson, Missouri. Founded in 2019, Smalls Sliders currently has 375 Cans open or under development and is active across 30 states.

Academy Sports + Outdoors

Katy, Texas — Katy, Texas-based Academy Sports + Outdoors has opened five new locations in the fourth quarter of 2025. The new locations include Russellville, Arkansas; Seguin, Texas; Fort Wayne, Indiana; El Paso, Texas; and New Braunfels, Texas. With the addition of these stores, Academy will have opened 24 new locations by the end of fiscal 2025. Originally founded in 1938 as a family business, Academy now operates more than 300 stores across 21 states.

Killeen Marketplace

Texas and Arkansas — Beechwood, Ohio-based Chase Properties has purchased a 514,983-square-foot retail portfolio of four shopping centers located in Texas and Arkansas. The portfolio includes Southloop Crossing in Lufkin, Texas; Killeen Marketplace in Killeen, Texas; Southcenter Shopping Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas; and Massard Crossing in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Notable tenants at the properties include Ross Dress for Less, Best Buy, T.J. Maxx, Kroger and Hobby Lobby. The portfolio was 97 percent leased at the time of sale. Sam's Club

Bentonville, Ark. — Sam’s Club, a division of Walmart, has announced plans to remodel all 600 of its existing membership-based stores nationwide. As part of its long-term strategy, Sam’s Club will also open 30 new locations over the next several years while building a pipeline to begin opening 15 new clubs annually. This marks the first expansion since 2017 after Sam’s Club closed 62 locations in 2018. The stores will be modeled after the Grapevine, Texas, location, which opened in December 2024. Fayetteville, Ark. — Edgemark Communities has purchased College Marketplace, a 64,226-square-foot shopping center located in Fayetteville. Whole Foods Market anchors the center, which was built on a seven-acre site in 2015 near the University of Arkansas campus. Other tenants at the property include Chipotle Mexican Grill, Great Clips, Cava and Alumni Hall.

Dunham's-Sports_Harrison-Ark

Harrison, Ark. — Hanley Investment Group Real Estate Advisors has brokered the sale of a 145,588-square-foot retail center located in Harrison. Originally built in 1978, the property was expanded in 2020. Tenants at the center, which was 95 percent occupied at the time of sale, include Tractor Supply, Planet Fitness, Big Lots, Dunham’s Sports, Golden Tickets Cinemas, Factory Connection and Popeyes. Jeff Lefko, Kevin Fryman and Bill Asher of Hanley, in association with ParaSell Inc., represented the seller in the transaction. A private investor acquired the property.

Spring Creek Centre

Fayetteville, Ark.  — An affiliate of Cohen & Steers has acquired a two-property, open-air shopping center complex located in Fayetteville, located in the northwest portion of Arkansas near the Oklahoma and Missouri borders.  Totaling 403,000 square feet, the complex comprises the retail centers Spring Creek Centre and Steele Crossing. Tenants at the properties include T.J. Maxx, Ulta Beauty, Best Buy, Old Navy, PetSmart and Kohl’s. The centers also feature corporately owned Walmart, The Home Depot and Target stores. Fayetteville, Ark. — Arkansas-based fast-casual brand Slim Chickens has signed a franchise deal for 12 units in the state of Pennsylvania. Plans include the addition of restaurants in the counties of Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, York, Cumberland, Centre, Franklin, Mifflin, Juniata, Perry and Adams. PSMMSM PA Ventures, also a Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee, will own and operate the new units.

Walmart-Health

Bentonville, Ark. — Walmart has decided to shutter all 51 Walmart Health locations, as well as the Walmart Health Virtual Care service. The Bentonville-based retail giant stated that the business model, which was formally launched in 2019, was not sustainable. The company cited a lack of profitability due to “the challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs.” Walmart Health locations are situated in six different states — Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri and Texas — according to the Walmart Health online directory.
